What ship had the best proposal? Part 2: Ai and Hachimaki

Planetes is an awesome show -- hard SF which doesn't scrimp on its characters, something that can both be funny, kick-ass and sad, and a show that knows how to write a 25 minute episode that both has a story and furthers the arc. So let me tell you about the two leads.

Day 29 - What ship had the best proposal? Tie Between Ekaterin/Miles and Ai/Hachi

Being contrary and naming two. Because I am on a Planetes binge, and want to talk about Ai/Hachimaki, but Miles and Ekaterin still probably edge them out.

So, Miles Vorkosigan is nobility, former intelligence officer and current troubleshooter for the Emperor of Barrayar (who is also his foster brother). )

(and that was long, so I'll talk about Ai and Hachimaki in another post. Also, no Cryoburn spoilers in the comments, please.

Day 27 - A pairing that you loved and ended up hating? Zuko/Katara

Well, actually I went from 'it could be interesting' to 'lordie, what now'?

A:tLA was pretty short on female characters in the first season. We got Katara, Yue, and a couple of one-episode badasses who later came back (Jun, Suki, Smellerbee...)*, while there were three major young men (Aang, Sokka, Zuko) and two older ones (Iroh and Zhao), plus the requisite arc characters and one-episode characters who later return. So, it's probably not surprising that Zuko/Katara became a ship, even if Zuko's only real scene with her was when he found her necklace and used it to track Aang. Most of Zuko's scenes were with Aang, Iroh and Zhao -- he barely seemed to notice Katara and Sokka besides 'the Avatar's friends'.

Then second season came around.  )

Day 26 - A pairing that you hated and ended up loving? Harry/Ginny

More 'completely apathetic' about. It kind of flew under the radar until Harry got his love life figured out, then I started thinking about it.

One thing I like is the fact Ginny, once she gets past her crush, doesn't take shit from people. )

Day 23 - A crazy love triangle/quadrilateral that worked out great? Merle/Van/Hitomi/Allen/Millerna/Dryden

Okay, I could probably reduce that down to Van/Hitomi/Allen, but...

So, let's explain this.  )

Day 22 - A pairing you hate and no one else understands why? Xellos/Filia

Well, actually plenty of people understand why. And to be fair, this is one of those things that is 90% execution... though 99% of people who write it will get it wrong*. I could really throw Xellos/Lina and Xellos/Zel and Xellos/anyone-except-maybe-Xelas-or-Shabranigdo here, but I mostly move in the 'traditional het pairing' circles, rather than the alt-het-pairing or slash circles, and most trad fans will ship Xellos with Filia if they ship him.

So, Slayers. Xellos is a mazoku, a being created from piece of the source of all destruction in the world. Filia is a golden dragon, a mortal servant of the gods, who represent creation. You see the problem. Xellos drives Filia up the wall, and Filia seems to be one of the few beings that can ruffle Xellos's metaphorical feathers.

Now, the big thing here is that neither of them is human. )

Day 21 - A pairing you like and no one else understands why? Zelgadis/Sylphiel

Part of it is that I just like pairing Zel off with people*. And Amelia, but I've never really found an alt-pairing I like for her. (I mean, maybe Amelia/Pocota, but the whole 'Pocota is stuck as a plushie' thing kind of puts a damper on things. At least Zel is shaped like an adult and has hormones, while despite being at least in his teens, Pocota acts like a child.)

I think where it comes from is that in the manga and novels, instead of having the dramatic Zel entrance, Zel beat Lina and Gourry to Sairaag and Sylphiel basically asked him to help her figure out what the heck was going on. )

Day 19 - A pairing you've rooted for since the beginning? Sokka/Suki
Well, it's not something I could truly root for since the beginning beginning since Suki isn't in the first episode, but I liked it when Suki showed up in Season 1, and was pleased as punch when she showed up again in Seasons 2 and 3.

Normally, I don't like the 'sexist is shown his errors by talented female', mostly because it rings false.  )

Day 18 - What is the cutest pairing? Winry/Sheska

I know I tend towards canon pairings, and this is not a canon pairing at all. But this one is just so adorable in the first anime.

Anyway, Winry is the main character's childhood friend, who in modern terms would be a biomedical engineer and in her world's terms is an automail mechanic -- she makes and fits prosthetics learning from her grandma.  )

Day 17 - A pairing you thought would never work out, but did? Zuko/Mai

Or, rather, a pairing I thought could be badly executed so many ways during the show, but for which I was mostly satisfied with how it worked out.

Besides maybe Aang, Zuko went through the most character development throughout the series*. Hence my skepticism about romance, since it can be tricky enough to balance Zuko's changes within himself as well as extend this out to his this changes his relationships with other people.

Zuko is pretty much designated as the Ambiguous Antagonist from... well, at least as soon as we get his backstory from Iroh.  )

Day 16 - What is the absolute worst pairing that is annoying me right now? Roy/Ed

I'm old enough to be live and let live about fandom. So I don't know if I'd call anything the 'absolute worse' since, that implies a lot stronger emotion than I normally give 'fictional characters dating'.

Again, I could name the boatload of crummy paranormal romance novels I've read here. Or Twilight. But I don't really remember the romance novels, and I'll at least admit that Twilight doesn't actively annoy me because I don't like the books in general and admit they are definitely Not My Thing. (In other words, it's easy for me to pretend Edward and Bella don't actually exist, so they can't annoy me that much.)

Or I could list my pet peeves, but a lot of them are in execution. )

Day 15 - What is your favorite real life pairing? N/a -- let's go with other media
What is your favorite video game pairing? Link/Zelda, the Legend of Zelda

I'm not a big real-life shipper. I mean, I could give the same answer I did for Day 10 (:: waves to all her friends in relationships::) but I don't feel like repeating myself. So... topic change!

There are plenty of media besides 'television' and 'books', even if I start grouping anime/cartoons in with TV and graphic novels with books. Even if I fold movies into TV, I still get video games.

Ocarina of Time was the fist video game I owned.  )

Day 14 - What is your favorite book pairing? Dag/Fawn

Well, I could have named Parno/Dhulyn again, but I'm trying to keep this original and spotlight as many couples as I can.

One thing I like about Lois Bujold's books is that she is very good at doing SFF with romantic elements which further the story.  )
beccastareyes: (Slayers)
Day 13 - What is your favorite television pairing? Amelia/Zelgadis

Cartoons totally count as TV. Even Japanese cartoons.

So, Slayers. I'm inordinately fond of it. )

Day 12 - Who had the best wedding? Magrat/Verence

Tempted to nominate Worf and Dax for this one, too. It was a pretty good wedding. But I think Magrat and Verence from Discworld have them beat. After all, there was only a symbolic attack during the ceremony.

Apologies for the art -- ended up grabbing a crop of the Josh Kirby cover for... I think Wyrd Sisters.  )

Day 11 - What is your dream pairing? Dhulyn/Parno

Aw, jeez. They're making me choose. Okay, I'm gonna be obscure here, and hopefully have you guys all go out and buy books. Yay books! I totally blame Slayers for this, but I have a thing for books which feature two people (preferably at least one who is female*) for which the following is true:

1. They are partners, in the truest sense of the world. Whether they are romantic or not, they have pieces of each other's heart and soul (metaphorically speaking).
2. Their relationship is not fraught with the 'will they or won't they'? Either they are platonic, or married/in a stable long-term relationship or otherwise diffuse the tension quickly.

So, I happened along a recommendation for the Dhulyn and Parno series, and took to it like a duck to water. )

Day 10 - Why aren't these two married in real life? N/a

Another question I'm not entirely sure what it's asking. I guess a pair of actors that always ooze chemistry whenever they are playing roles together. Except I never pay attention to actors, unless I notice that I remember them from Star Trek.

Well, I could be a smart-aleck and say [insanejournal.com profile] yuuo and [insanejournal.com profile] kuchehexe, and the reason they aren't married in real life is because Nebraska is full of poopyheads.

So, ask me a question that you think I should answer instead. About romance in fiction.
