Online Comics Day
Well, that's some time around here (I think it's the 5th), so I figured I'd celebrate by listing the webcomics I read and why I like them. Some of these are classics and some are obscure. I also drew a special comic for my site (http://comic.phoenixdawn.net/comic.php?id=95) which features a lot of visual comic references (See how many you can find)
Daily (Or Nearly So)
Schlock Mercenary: It's a comic about a company of space mercenaries and the wacky hijinks that happen as they go to extic places, meet fascinating life forms and kill them for money. Frankly, it's hilarious, AND the science/technobabble makes my inner astrophysicist squee. That and Howard is far better at updating than me -- from what I can figure, he is usually two or three weeks ahead.
Something*Positive: Somehting Positive chronicles the life of one Davan, a 20-something guy with a boneless panty-stealing cat and two crazy female friends. Another one in the funny column of comics, though this is much more darkly funny. Plus, there are geek-type/gamer type jokes occassionally. Add to that the fact Randy can actually write and do character evolution (character evolution is like my crack) -- the character of Mike (a minor character), for example, has moved from a Grade A Asshole to a decent guy and I never thought I would like Monette (another minor character who was introduced as a lesbian who kept sleeping with en apparently by accident) as much as I do.
MWF or MF or F
Terinu: A more serious comic -- Terinu as an adventure space opera type thing that tells of a pilot, an engineer and a member of the space forces when they rescuet a runaway kid (Terinu, the title character). First of all, Peta's art is damn impressive. Second of all, the cast of characters are really likeable and realistic-seeming (even the aliens). I actually went through the archive in one sitting.
21st Century Fox: Yes, it's a comic about anthropomorphic animals. Deal. The comic has a bit of an ensemble cast (which explores a world that is both futuristc and what happens when it seems like everything with a pulse is an intelligent life form) but mostly seems to chronicle (I like that word) the life of one Jack, an engineer who happens to be a fox, and his partner Cecil, who happens to be a giraffe -- both professional (you meet some funny people as engineers) and personal. Another comic where the science ficiton and science make me squee -- there is mcuh spaceflight and astronomy mentioned.
Legendary Magical Angel Princess Celeste: A parody magical girl comic -- sometimes a little chaotic, but I'm a sucker for these things. I was a Sailor Moon fan, after all . Includes incompetent bad guys, talking animals with attitude problems (you try being named Cutey Sparkle-Feather by your first assignment and see how long it takes you to want to be called the Parrot of Doom), mysterious magcial guardians and a girl who thinks she can make magicla girls not exist by disbelieving in them.
TRS or TR
8-bit Theater: The quintessential sprite comic. Meet Black Mage, an amoral obscenly powerful spellcaster; Fighter, a rather stupid swordsman; Red Mage, who keeps taking about +2s and character sheets; and Thief, who currently owns all of their souls thanks to a contract Fighter signed. They are the Light Warriors -- and will probably win as the bad guys aren't exactly competent either. Frankly, this is a hilarious comic, and there are enough fantasy/video game/whatever jokes to keep any geek amused.
Dub This!: Every anime club has its sub purists, kawaii-obsessed fangirls, artists, vidders, cosplayers, and so on. This one has rival gangs out to obpress the anime cene, creepy brothers, romantic messes, and glowsticks. The comic can be a bit slow moving, and I once admitted that half the reason I read this was because it made the drama in our club look like peanuts, but there are some great anime jokes -- and, hey, melodrama is in the Grand Anime Tradtion.
Weekends
Timescapes: Jenna is a priestess with a snarky dragon familiar, she overslept on her final and now has to save all time from a destructive demon. Her partners include her bodyguard (who so far as died and crossedressed) and a young catgirl summoner formt he past who would be more helpful if anyone really understood what she was saying. This has pretty art, and a good mix of drama and humor, usually from Dolosus (the dragon). I just wish the artist wasn't hella busy.
Sporadic/Dead/On Hiatus
Phantom 20/20: Jack can see ghosts. His dead hamster watches over him. His friends are a Suburban Samurai in a constant war against Ninja and a girl who should know better than to hang aroudn people like this. It's cute, and lighthearted and there are Ninja.
Donut Girls!: Another anime-parody comic. Heather is a normal self-insertion from the most boring place on the planet, when suddenly all hell breaks loose and there are now giant mecha and magcial girls and bishounen that speak bad Engrish that want her to be the Chosen one. She does what any fan does -- milsk this for all it's worth. The art's not bad, the updates happenw henever
uncreativity feels like it, and it's actually pretty funny.
BIshounen Adventures!: The brother comic to Donut Girls, it pretty much is the already fan-slanted DG universe catered even more to a bishounen-loving fangirl's wildest dreams (with a rather humorous twist -- UC may be a shameles fangirl, but she also knows all the funny thing about them). Art is sketchy -- mostly because UC doodles it in her notebook whenever (Ha! I told them your secret!)
