1. A freak accident suddenly strips you of the ability to perform even the simplest calculation. What do you do?
The next day (or when I am sufficiently recovered to go to class, I go down to the appropriate offices and drop my current course load, chaneg my major to English with a Japanese and Latin minors, and plan on getting my Ph. D. in Linguistics. And I hope that I can use the Special Ed program to help wiht my math GREs.
2. Holy crap, your home is burning! Your family and pets have all gotten out safely, and you have just enough time to save one possession from the blaze. Which one do you pick, and why?
Well, I'm going to assume my purse is with me -- that has my important documents and my flash drive on it. Beyond that... I suppose my drawer full of notebooks and sketchbooks. I have years worth of writing and drawing in there.
3. For some bizarre reason, an evil megalomaniac has kidnapped you and is stripping you of four of your five senses (sight, smell, hearing, taste and touch)--but s/he'll let you keep one of your choice. Which one do you keep, and why?
Well, smell and taste are right out, because they have no reliable way of communicating with others. Hearing would probably be next -- as much as I love music, I love art more. I would probably keep sight, if I could learn to navigate without touch -- would that paralyze my motor nervbes as well? Still sight -- Hawking proves physicists don't need much motor nerves.
4. Poof! Your fairy godmother suddenly descends and says she will grant you one wish. What do you say to her?
Thansk. I'll svae it for an emergency. I don't really need anything now. Well, either that or I go the Granny Weatherwax route. Let everyone around me be who they think they are.
5. What do you want on your tombstone?
Green pepers and extra cheese! Do they even air that commercial any more? Anyways... I once remember a snatch of poetry I read in Sky and Telescope -- the poem itself was called "An Eldery Astronomer to his Pupil", or something like that. If anyone can find the full poem, I would love them muchly. S&T quoted one stanza: "Though my soul may set in darkness/ It will rise in perfect light./ I have loved the stars too fondly,/ To be fearful of the night." That sounds pretty good, if unoriginal.
