Well, today was a productive day of RP.

Our characters are members of a world-crossing organization in the Palladium mega-verse. We dicovered our archnemeses were planning on conquering a world -- [livejournal.com profile] lulidine, the GM described it as 'like pre-Rifts Earth, if 9-11 had made everyone even more crazy and the US had turned into a police state in order to protect people from the terrorists. American and China are currently at war with Japan and Canada, and the world doens't like the US much."
So, we were surpposed to get the bad guys out and maybe help restore democracy. We managed to get some information where we were dropped (in San Francisco), make contact with the resistance, and kill the bad guy on our tail. Then (since we blew our cover) we needed to leave town. Mint, [livejournal.com profile] gerrib's character, a super, suggested we use her gravity-altering powers to set off a minor earthquake, and we all thought that was a good idea -- none of us were good-aligned, to the GM's annoyance and the more moral of us thought hey, we can make it small enough that very few people die, since it is one of the most earthquake-proof cities on the planet.
So, while the rest of us started working our way to the rendevous point, Mint found where the San Andreas fault ran and noticed that our enemies had already weakened it. However, she didn't think about this and decided to set off an earthquake anyway.
The fault critically faield its saving throw. The surrounding faults didn't make saving throws as well. The GM then remembered that California has nuclear power. He made a saving throw for the nearest power plant. It critically failed. At this point, the GM just declared that we had released enough energy to trigger the coming of the Rifts. Read: we instigated the Apocalypse and killed 98% of the population of california, and probably a lot of other people around the world. Of course, that meant the GM had to call it for the night, as this was NOT in his plans.
I blame the dice. The GM rolled about four ones, and in about 10 rolls of a d20, only two rolls above 10.
