Slayers Essay
Nov. 2nd, 2003 12:12 pmOkay, this has been going through my head recently, but, thanks to a rant from
houounoaizou, I decided to type it up. Basically it is one reason why I find Lina/Zelgadis 'shipping unappealing -- a reason not often brought up.
First of all, I am biased -- I am a canonshipper: I ship Lina/Gourry and Zelgadis/Amelia (with some flexibilty about the latter). However, the point will stand even without these belifs -- a Lina/anyone-but-Zel 'shipper could use it just as well as a Lina/Gourry shipper could.
First of all, forget what you think you know about Slayers relationship. Then remember these two details: Lina and Amelia are friends and Amelia has a crush on Zelgadis.
It is quite obvious that Amelia has at least a crush on Zel -- in TRY she seems quite enamored with him. She objected to being paired with Gourry instead of Zel at the marriage temple. She also asks him to return with her to Sailoon at the end of TRY.
It is pretty clear that Lina and Amelia are good friends -- while one may get annoyed with the other (and tell me you haven't gotten annoyed with your friends on occassion) they are still quite comfortable around each other. Look at the bathhouse scene in NEXT (the episode where Martina curses Lina). The two girls are comfortabloy engaging in chitchat, just like old friends.
If there is one thing that my mother has taught me about relationships it's thus: NEVER DATE SOMEONE YOUR FRIEND IS ATTRACTED TO. I've seen friends get itno fights over women (or men) that both are attracted to. It is not pretty. And I would contend that Lina is smart enough to know this. Thus, regardless of Lina's feelings towards Zel and Zel's feelings towards Lina, Lina would not date Zel out of respect for Amelia. Amelia would probably not even know Lina would be doing this -- Lina would probably not even let her fiind out, as I could se Amelia go into the passive-agressive 'it doens't bother me' when it does.
Thank you, thank you.

(no subject)
Nov. 2nd, 2003 10:20 pmI was a good girl. When I decided to play a spellcasting rock-person for our Palladium RIFTS game, I didn't try to make him angsty. He actually started out easygoing. Well, then one of his coworkers (the one he had a crush on, no less) got captured and tortured by their enemies, and he was knocked out twice during her kidnapping.
This game has a history of having bad things happen to PCs -- one player had to retire hers as the PC was a reforming demon who accidentally created an appocalypse.
( And now for something completely different... )
