Jul. 30th, 2004 10:22 pmI had dinner wiht my mother tonight. As I was talking with her about my friends, I relaized something. Most of my friends with liberal parents are still on good terms with them, while most of my friends with more conservative parents are trying to break ties with them. But, the thing is, I don't notice that either group is more incluined to produce a screwup.
I'm not talking liberal/conservative in the political sense.. perhaps better words would be authoritarian or not. I mean, my mother usually had comon sense rules once I was a teenager. We never had a fixed curfew, because we were told as long as we returned home at a reasonable hour, and let Mom know where we were, we didn't need one. Now that I am in college, Mom pretty much treats me as an adult -- while she will still give advice, and express concern over me, and likes to have a general idea where i am when I stay at home (more so she knows if she has to cook for me, or if she should leave the door unlocked because I'm getting in late) -- she does not try to police who I hang out with, what I spend my money on and what I do. Actually, she never did, besides telling me her opinion.
And you have to love a mother who knows that some anime is good, some is not suitable for a twelve year old boy, so she will either ask me to screen titles, or watch them herself iwht my little brother. Not to mention the way she fights tooth and nail for him (or me, when I was in school) to get the help he needs.
I'm just gald I have a parent who I have such a close relationship with -- I know I can tell her anything and it won't end in a screaming match. Worse i would get is a rather annoyed 'I don't believe you did that' conversation, and then only if I did somehting I should know better than to do.
