It occurs to me that in a couple of years, I will sit down with a few professors to work on a project. This project will be my heart and soul for 3 to 5 years and I will work closly with these professors, constantly asking for advice, encouragement and guidance. Eventually, I will have a thesis. Then I will go into a room and give a talk, and those same professors, who are my mentors and presumably friends, will verbally tear out every hole and inconsitancy of this project, while I stand there and take it and explain as best I can what I did and why, and not break down into a hissy fit, not tell them to go easy on me because I worked so damn hard or my cat died or I am only a graduate student, and not claim bias because I'm female/working with a certain topic/etc. and otherwise not make excuses. Then, after it's all over, if I do well and present myself as suits a scientist, they will smile, tell me I did a good job, and hand me a piece of paper that lets me attach Doctor to my name.
It occurs to me that fandom would be a different place if it were like this. Unfortunatly, given the amount of intra-departmental and inter-departmental squabbles I've seen, it probably would be just as wanky.
