On the Legality of Fanworks and Commerce
Apr. 13th, 2005 12:54 pmIt's an odd issue, the legality of fanworks. Especially when you get into fannish perceptions of it. I mean, there are things that the vast majority of fans consider not kosher -- selling liscenced images on shirts, for one. Then there are things on which fans vary in opinion:
-- Some conventions have art shows and art auctions which can feature copyrighted characters. In fact, these tend to be the top sellers (though the only work I've ever sold at convention was space art).
-- Many fan artists who take commissions will allow people to comission characters they do not hold the copyright for. Cosplay comissioners are even more common (someone on

Epaulettes
Apr. 13th, 2005 04:58 pmSo, I found out yesterday that, because I managed to not fail out of the Honors Program, I get to wear an epaulette with my graduation robe. I picked it up today, and basically it's a red and white braided cord-thingee with safety pins on either end (because I don't expect most peopel to really know what an epaulette is). Now, I have to figure out
a) How to attach it to the right shoulder of my robe (first person to say 'the provided safty pins will be shot')
b) How to do so in a way that looks nice and straight without becoming a contortionist (you try pinning something to clothing near the shoulder of your dominant hand. Especially the back)
c) Exactly where on my shoulder it goes -- by the neckline, in the middle, or on the seam of the armhole (where it falls down a lot).
