Inspired by a post a friend steered me towards on a slasher's perspective of FMA. The idea that some ships (specifically Roy/Riza) feel like slash but between a man and a woman is mentioned, as is the baggage associated with writing various combinations of men and women.

It's kind of sad...

If you write het, you are being hidebound and sticking to storybook romances.
If you write slash, you are a squeeing fangirl who is only doing it for teh hawt bishies.
If you write saffic, you are either a man-hating lesbian or a horny guy.
If you write traditional pairings, you are boring
If you write alternate pairings, you are writing self-insert-by-proxy wish fulfillment or trying to be different for the sake of being the only one who writes Shou Tucker/Zelgadis Graywords.

I know fans who write pairings for the sake of the chemistry between two characters. The ones for which it doesn't matter if it's Roy and Riza, Roy and Rick, or Rhonda and Riza -- they are writing because Mustang and Hawkeye have chemistry. Some of them favor slash or het or saffic out of personal preference, but they do not identify as slash writers or het writers or saffic writers, and usually have ships off all three. I wonder why there aren't more people like that.
