Real life and geeky pictures
Oct. 7th, 2006 03:26 pmWow.... This is a picture of Mars. Specifically, this is a picture of Victoria Crater. Victoria Crater is about a kilometer across and has a number of lovely features, but of current interest is that the rover Opportunity is currently at its rim.
See that silver speck? It's a rover the size of a go-kart that was originally built on Earth. This is the first outside photograph that has been taken of it since it left Earth. How friggen cool is that?
So, I got my program working, and now have to put in the new data (I had been using Voyager data to test it, but we've got better data with Cassini now -- worst case scenario is that we have a model of Hyperion so we know its orientation even if we can't pick out surface features. Best case (for me) is that Hyperion's interior is something other than 'a uniform mix of ice, rock and voidspace and we can use my rotation model to figure out constraints on what's inside.
So, anyway, I went to bug one of the Research Associates about data (Kinda annoying that I finished right before a major conference, so I'm going to have to wait on data), and he asked what I was doing. He also said that I had to be smart to be doing dynamics -- he couldn't manage it.
A Ph D in astronomy called me smart -- and not in a 'Aw, you're a cute little student' kind of way. OMG.
I bought a bathmat today after an accident in the shower yesterday -- I slipped and bumped my head. I'm okay, aside from developing what's probably a bruise right behind my right ear. I'm keeping an eye on things, though -- I'd hate to have damaged something up there. But hopefully, with one of those non-stick things down in the shower, it won't happen again.
Bought more manga (Dammit, Borders, you need to get stuff earlier -- I just NOW got FMA #9) and CDs as well. I'm trying to decide if I can use fabric dye to fix the bleach stains on my black pants and FMA T-shirt -- I spilled stuff on them when cleaning last week. Anyone have any suggestions?
