So I went out for tea with my officemate Sharvari -- there's a coffee (and tea ^_^) truck that works about a couple of blocks from me. On the way back, I was looking up, and went, "Oh, a sundog."
So, of course now I had to explain to Sharvari what one was. I also found a 22° halo with the suggestion of another one, and two circumzenithal arcs. No, seriously, I wish I had my camera.
I managed to go drag one of my other officemates Akshay outside, as well as Lisa and Shannon from the first floor. None of them had seen it before and only one had even known what a sundog was. Heck, Sharvari at first thought that the sundog was the Sun shining through the clouds.
Some of these things can be really amazing -- supposedly Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity after a display looked remarkably cross-like. This is the best one I had ever seen (I even got to see it from the roof ^_^).
Moral of the story is that people need to look up more -- I know to do this because I read Sky and Telescope and you can see some seriously cool pictures of halos. Apparently sundogs are quite common, but few people see them since they don't regularly look at the sky. Here's something with some more pictures.
Gee, this improved my entire day. Yay for halos!
ETA: We dragged out the other two officemates (Tanya, and Min) and a research associate. Apparently I am now the office expert on optical phenomena. Plus, a meeting left free food, including a single slice of chocolate cake. Today is officially the most awesome day ever.
