Oct. 14th, 2012 08:25 pmSo, I successfully found my way to the nearby Walmart to pick up about $20 worth of groceries to ensure that I can eat something without having to fight hundreds of astronomers all trying to get their lunch in an hour. (I feel bad for the poor sandwich shop and pizza shop people...) Given the lack of a coffee machine in my room, I'll have to get tea at the cafe or Starbucks, but I have cereal, apples and sandwich fixings.
I also went to the grad student reception, then the regular reception. The grad student reception involved me meeting a grad student from Florida that I've met once before because we work on similar things (light scattering in Saturn's rings -- we use different instruments, though) and her group-mates. Which was nice. We were seated by subject area, but there was only the four of us so we started recruiting latecomers and other people we knew.
At the reception I actually talked to a scientist I knew and included the question 'do you know of any postdoc positions?' He didn't, but promised to keep me in mind if someone he knew was looking. But that's not the point: the point is, I did it. I also chatted with some former Cornell people because I hadn't seen them in a while, then noticed I was yawning and generally being tired, so came back to my room to chill.
Tomorrow is talks on Icy Satellites. I'll try to blog about interesting matters, since I'm supposed to be putting together a highlights reel for next week's Planetary Lunch. (My co-worker Dan is also giving his talk -- it's sort of in the hybrid space between rings and moons, since it's one of the rings that is made by a moon. But it's a cool talk.)
