So, school is starting again. I'm only taking one class this semester -- a seminar on Classic Papers in Planetary Science. I'm hoping it'll conquer my fear of public speaking in front of scientists. (Hint: this is not a desirable trait for a scientist.) I'm also grading for Astro 280, a writing course. I did the same last year -- which means that I may be prone to rant about students. (I do lock all such rants, and don't use names. My students have a right to privacy.) I had a nice meeting with my advisor, discussing possible thesis topics and future conferences. And two days ago I got into a car accident.
Basically, I was walking after dinner, trying to get to the bus in time so I wouldn't have to spend 30 minutes in the parking lot. I cut across a crosswalk, following another pedestrian and was hit crossing the road. I got a bump on my head, some serious bruises and contusions, two skinned knees and a skinned elbow, but no broken bones, major head injuries or neck injuries. I ended up spending two and a half hours in the hospital -- one hour waiting on the X-ray so I could be taken off the uncomfortable equipment that was supposed to prevent spinal injuries from me moving around, then another getting set up to leave.
So, I'm horribly sore, and sleeping half the time, but I'm okay. I probably should warn my officemates, though -- one was in a bike-car collision two weeks ago, so one might say that cars have it out for us.
