My diplomacy strikes again
Jul. 1st, 2003 02:38 pmI am currently 3 for 4 on constructive reviews -- and most of these were within a month -- two in the past week alone.
The first detailed, constructive review I left was on a BtVS/Stargate SG-1 crossover that I read on a Train Wreck impulse. I told the author that his/her story wasn't bad for a crossover, and the dialog was actually quite good, but that he/she needed to work on description. He/she ignored me.
Review #2 was to an Escaflowne AU. I told the author her story was a bit confusing, especially the beginning where she sets up the AU, and that she made a few minor mistakes, but that her charatcerization seemed good (considering the AU nature). She e-mailed me back, thanking me, and in the next chapter, promised to try to make it less confusing.
Review #3 was for a Pokemon fic about Pokemon escaping from a breeding center to be free. I told the author he seemed to have a decent grasp on storytelling, but that his prose was a bit confusing, and his dialog stilted. Not only did he IM me to thank me, but he took me up on my offer to beta-read, and we talked for a bit about anime. He even read one of my stories.
Review #4 was for a Fushigi Yugi fic about Miaka and Yui after the TV series. I complimented the author for writing something that wasn't about bishounen or Mary Sues, characterizing Miaka very well (and not bashing her! hooray!), but told her she should pick a POV and stick to it, and to use italics or single quotes or something to set off direct thoughts. She e-mailed me back and thanked me. She also asked how to italicize text, and I ran her through the basics of using Notepad to write html.
So, I've had:
0 flames
1 person not bother to contact me
1 IM
1 offer for beta-reading work
2 e-mails
and 3 thankful authors.
I have an art of picking sensible authors who appreciate the time I spend on typing a long review. I am a Finder of Good Fic. Now, if only I could find my socks/keys/art supplies/books/important papers when I needed them
