beccastareyesDay 24 - Favorite anime hero or heroine: Rosette Christopher
Rosette is the protagonist of Chrono Crusade. She's a teenaged exorcist in a religious order (hence the habit) in 1920's America, joined after a demon kidnapped her brother, Joshua. Rosette drives like a maniac, eats like someone was going to take it away, is a crack shot with the special guns designed to hurt supernatural beasties, is fascinated by gambling, and generally has little restraint in anything she does. She quickly befriends Azmaria, a young girl with the same spiritual gifts as her brother, and encourages the younger girl to enjoy life like her. She even charms Satella, a German demon-hunter with little patience for her. Rosette also realizes she's unlikely to live to age 30.
See, Rosette and Joshua got headlong involved in a struggle between demons, thanks to Joshua's powers. They discover a hornless demon in the woods, Chrono, who had wanted to seal himself away to avoid a power struggle between the forces of Pandemonium and the rebel 'sinners', lead by the demon Aion. They become friends, and it's Chrono that Rosette turns to when Aion tries to make a grab for Joshua. Chrono's lack of horns limit his power, so Rosette offers her life-force to boost Chrono's power. This lets Chrono be able to fight at full strength, but shortens Rosette's life. And even then, they are unable to save Joshua and Rosette vows to find Aion and get her brother back.
I like Rosette because of her joye de vivre, and her ability to always move forward. She realizes her own mortality -- between supporting Chrono and the fact she regularly puts herself into danger for her job -- but accepts that she has a choice between quantity and quality of life, and she's made her choice. But, man, is the end of the manga a tearjerker, though it ends about the way I expect. (I haven't seen the anime past where it diverges.)
