You know, I could even understand it if she fell back on the 'Spending time on fanart will mean you won't have time for original art' arguement that fanficcers use. But this bit about how fanart will corrupt your art style?

Seriously, one's style of writing or art should never be static. One should always be looking at other's works and asking oenself 'Why did this person do that?' 'Can I adapt that to my own work?' 'What do I like and dislike and why?' Having a static style whether it be Akira Toriyama's, Robert Heinlein's, Randy Milholland's, Cassandra Claire's, mine, or somehting you call your own is stagnation. Let's face it, no one will write the perfect story or draw the perfect picture, so we need to experiment to apporach perfection.

And there is a difference between drawing fanart and slavishly copying pictures from manga. I have seen Slayers fanartistis who try to draw the characters in their own styles.. it's actually nice. And I love it when artits who can do non-anime stuff draw me fanart. I love Phoenix Dawn fanart period.
