A Note About Parents
Aug. 19th, 2003 11:11 pmI've heard
zannechaos and
yuuo complain about God-awful parents, usually when explaining why they don't want children, and how society is so child-centric that those who want to remain childless are looked upon as weird. Also seen people complain about how anime and parents are a bad mix.
Well, thought I'd share some observations on my mother gets along with anime.
First of all, let me say, my mother doesn't get anime and manga. While it is true all she sees are the TV-edits and Shounen Jumps my little brother (Ben, age 12) likes, she still does not understand it. However, when my little brother is in the living room watching it, she is often in the kitchen and keeping an eye on him and the TV. She says she watches so that she has some idea about what's going on with Ben. When I come home with new anime to show Ben, Mom asks me if it's age-appropriate. She has me so vigilant, I reread my Slayers manga to check to see which ones showed Lina naked, and thus, cannot be seen by my little brother. (The Slayers Specials with Naga aren't for his eyes until high shcool) She also checks with mostn non-Western-animated movie -- usually I can tell her how appropriate it is.
I know she can and will ban him from watching shows she doesn't like -- it happened a while with the Simpsons because Ben was learning how to moon people from it and it comes close with Ed, Edd and Eddy sometimes.
So here's a hooray for my mother! In an age where parents let TV be the babysitter and expect society to keep it clean, some still keep an eye on what their kids do.
