Jul. 19th, 2006 11:21 am... My mother still sends me clothing at my age. (Yes, she knows my tastes, but...) On the other hand, she found my other FMA shirt! ^_^
In other news: Point of Discussion. A LJ friend pointed out a couple of days ago that in the show Avatar: The Last Airbender whenever the character Katara shows leadership qualities (i. e. trying to keep the group from killing one another/dying of thirst/eating hallucinogenic cacti when they get stranded in the desert after their sky bison was stolen) she is described as 'motherly', rather than as 'a good leader'. Got me wondering about bias in perception -- can we accept that a female leader can be a leader without comparing her to a mother? Is it because, despite our best efforts, mot leadership roles are still presented as masculine? Does it describe Katara's leadership style? (and, in which case, can we use it as a unisex word?) Or is it just because everyone in that episode was acting a bit more childish than usual, do to being thirsty and tired and half-blind/missing his spirit guide/hallucinating due to funny cactus juice.
