This is gonna go up on
little_details when I get home -- I'm worried I'm missing some obvious source on Google.
Okay, so one of the MCs in my writing is going to be a police officer in a small city in the Midwest USA (Lincoln, Nebraska) chosen by the virtue that I lived there for a while, in roughly the modern-day. It's concerning me that what I know of police procedure I gained via TV and that I really should learn how things are actually done. So any websites I could look at?
So here's the situation. The MC is called in for a noise complaint on a party. (Are things like that just handled by whatever officer is nearest the location?) She notices that several of the party goers appear to be drugged* -- and has personal reasons** to suspect the party host was providing drugs and may have given them to some of the party-goers without their knowledge. What would be proper procedure here? (I'm assuming she would have to call to take anyone who appeared to be drugged somewhere for detox (at least) -- at the least holding them until they clear up and the host confesses that the partygoers had no clue he spiked their food. Would she be required to call for medical attention).
* Hallucinations, some minor paranoia. I did some reading and decided that extract of morning glory seeds was the best thing to use here -- it's pretty easy to get, and the party host is a gardener, so no one is gonna question what he needs with all those seeds.
** Personal reasons as in 'knows him outside of work, and suspects magical foul play'. She knows that can't go in a police report, and that the worse thing on his record are a few speeding tickets. On the other hand, 'hosting a party where the guests appear to be on a trip' is something that does seem to work.
