Part II: General Trends
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Less, since normally I write in NaNo, which gives me 50,000 words. Even without the other things I did in November, that would still set me near 75k. On the other hand, the numbers look right.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in 2008?
NEXTWAVE is a new one. Also, some drabbles for new fandoms (Edda of Burdens, Claymore), which I never know until I write them. And my first true crossover in years -- I did a fusion a couple of years ago, and one as a drabble joke-fic, but this was one I played straight.
What's your favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
I like 'Walking Lost', since it's a pretty little thing that gets into a character's head and explains her motivation.
Did you take any writing risks this year? (See above for unexpected pairings, etc.) What did you learn from them?
I wrote my first multi-chapter fic in a long time, though that I had been working on for ages. 'Walking Lost' was my first second-person POV piece, and 'The Weight of Secrets' was intended to be a genderqueer romance, but that didn't work too well. I'd say 'Kite-Flying Woman' was in a bit of an experimental style in that it was one side of a conversation/story-telling.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
Finish another long piece of fiction, and write some original fiction.
From my past year of writing, what was...
My Favorite Story:
See above, though 'Frost' is also looking goof.
My Best Story:
I don't know. A lot of people like 'Walking Lost', and 'The Kite-Flying Woman'.
Story Most Under-appreciated by the Universe:
Winry Rockbell, Martian Space Pilot. A Fullmetal Alchemist AU I had been writing for years, but hasn't gotten much attention outside of my circle of friends.
Most fun:
'Not Your Daddy's Holiday Special' and 'The Kite-Flying Woman' tie for this. Both were tremendously fun to write. 'Not Your Daddy's' for the fact I was going for absurdist humor and witty banter, and 'Kite Flying Woman' for the dialect and creating a voice for an original character while portraying what Zuko was doing as you listened.
Most disappointing:
'The Weight of Secrets'. So much I wanted to fold into it, and it was so hard to get it in.
Most sexy:
This year was a remarkably gen-filled year. I can think of maybe a half-dozen fics ('Frost', 'A Light in Dark Places', 'The Weight of Secrets', 'Aftermath', Leisure Pursuits' and maybe 'The Harsh Quality of Justice') that I even wrote with my ship-glasses on. 'Frost' probably wins, even if the sexy bits are interwoven with the main point (about aging and death). The competition was not fierce.
Story With a Single Sexy Moment:
'Leisure Pursuits', I think.
Hardest to Write:
MSP gave me endurance problems, just because writing a lot of words is hard. 'Light Cone' had ending problems. So did 'Frost' for that matter.
Most Unintentionally Telling:
You tell me, but I think 'Light Cone' and 'Listening' tell a lot about how much of a science nerd I am.
