Day 06 - The best kiss? Sir Gerard/Eleanor, Get Medieval

Watch me sit here and try to remember when people kiss. It's kind of funny, since I'm realizing that I don't put much stock in kissing, so I don't really remember it. I'm tempted to take something really silly, like the one in Super Mario RPG (if you play the game right, you can get Mario to kiss Peach... and Bowser and Booster to kiss one another -- actually Bowser in general was just awesome in that game). Novels are completely hopeless here. Maybe if you asked me when I was a teenager, and I could tell you stuff about the Animorphs.

Okay, when fans obsess over it, I do. I remember listening to anti-shippers whine about Katara and Aang. And Harry Potter.

And I do remember Lina and Gourry, but I'm trying to be good and not choose them twice in the same week. That's the kind of moment I want -- with pathos enough that I remember the scene as being significant, even if I'm fuzzy about kissing.

It did come to me, eventually, from a webcomic. [livejournal.com profile] get_medieval is a webcomic about five improbably-human aliens -- a mob-boss who went to the police and his family -- on the run from the space mafia who crash on a planet... that happens to be 14th Century Earth. Sir Gerard le Noir is a very intelligent and practical -- though more than a bit cynical -- French knight who is kind enough that the local abbot can talk him into taking two 'lost pilgrims'... who are actually Asher and Neithe, two of the aliens. Asher is even put into training as Sir Gerard's squire, though Gerard notes that between Asher and Neithe, he might have a single functional squire.

Gerard and Eleanor are both totally in love* and have an actual partnership in their relationship, despite legal and theological rules that say Eleanor should be subservient to her husband. They worry about one another -- her when he goes off to war, or goes jousting at tournaments despite his age, he when she finds herself pregnant again (as much as they love their kids, childbirth in 14th century France, even for a noblewoman, was risky).

Anyway, Gerard takes Asher and Neithe on a pilgrimage. They find Asher's stepmother's bodyguard, the missing spaceship they arrived in, and a group of mob assassins who are quite willing to kill Asher, Neithe, the bodyguard and the locals to get at Asher's father the ex-mob boss. They flee in the spaceship -- which Sir Gerard ends up flying after Asher is too injured to use his arms -- land on the Moon for repairs. And Sir Gerard realizes that as long as his family is connected to Asher and Neithe they aren't safe. Since he is the only human the assassins saw with Asher and Neithe, he is the only link that can really lead them to his family -- so he certainly can't return to his land, or his family, or even to Europe. So, he decides that despite the severe case of culture shock he's getting, his best bet is to stick with Asher and Neithe as they enter a spacefaring galaxy.

Things don't work out, though, since the assassins planted a bomb on the spaceship. They barely manage to crash-land in the English Channel, and wind their way back to Sir Gerard's land.

Imagine assuming you'd never see the woman you've lived with and loved for nearly two decades because otherwise she and your children would be killed. You can't even get a message to her that you weren't killed by bandits on the road. Then you go home and she's the first thing you see.

Yeah. Best kiss ever.

* The print versions of Get Medieval are totally worth it just for the story about how they met and ended up married, which is included as a side-story. The artist notes that she played fast and loose with legal matters there, but that it made a cute story.
