beccastareyesDay 7 - Character you’d most like to slap: Miaka & Tamahome, Fushigi Yuugi
I'm not a violent person, and I mentioned yesterday that characters that annoy me tend to break my suspension of disbelief. So I'd be more likely to verbally slap the writers than physically slap the characters.
I've mentioned several times in the companion piece (30 Days of shipping) how much I hate, hate, hate when authors try to extend romantic tension in writing when things can be solved by having a friend sit a couple down in a room for a half hour and have them talk. You can get away with it a bit when the two people aren't physically able to carry on a conversation -- I mention in the comments once about Curse of Chalion where the guy is rushing over the mountains and back to arrange a marriage treaty before the king dies, and the girl is helping to protect the heir. There it's hard to have them sit down and hash out their feelings.
The entire second season of Fushigi Yuugi was like this -- the first season handled it a bit better, in my opinion. I mean, I understand the business about 'the priestess must be a virgin', but why Miaka couldn't just say 'Hey, Tamahome, we can't do anything more than kiss until after I summon the god'? And then if he pushed, punch him in the face and break things off. It's not like he didn't want to summon Suzaku too.
(I won't even get into the fact that every villain takes 'the priestess must be a virgin' to mean 'it's rape o'clock!'. The priestess must be alive, too, and it's a lot easier to kill someone than to have sex with them. And it's not like Nakago et al. really have much of a moral compunction to not kill Miaka -- the only reason would be to keep Yui happy, and she doesn't need to know.)
I'm told Yuu Watase got a bit better at writing than she was when FY was first published. She already was aware of some of her weaknesses (she noted she was crap at love triangles, since she always would gravitate towards one choice).
Half of Sailor Moon R pissed me off for the same reason. It shouldn't have taken Mamoru long to figure out Usagi wasn't willing to buy his excuses, and he could have just told her 'I've been having horrible dreams about bad things happening, and I'm worried that if we're together, you'll get hurt'. Granted, she wouldn't have accepted that, but a romantic relationships (or lack thereof) shouldn't work by one member trying to paternally protect the other.
