Oh, fandom...

beccastareyesSo, Comic Con had the first trailer for The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra*.
I should be used to this from fandom by now. Folks were already shipping people based merely on a few images and mention of two characters(5). Now that we have an actual trailer, people are starting ship wars. Without even knowing more than one sentence about these characters. Heck, it's been less than forty-eight hours, and I've already seen shippy art of Mako**/Korra, when all we know is that Mako is a firebender from a multicultural household, has an earthbending brother, and 'brooding, though not so much as Zuko'*** and that Korra is the Avatar from the Southern Water Tribe and more headstrong and combative. And that they compete in mixed martial arts/pro-bending together with Mako's brother.
Really, I'm more like 'badass female lead!', 'Toph's daughter as metal/earthbending Chief of Police!', 'martial arts!'. And 'yay, sky bison and flying lemurs aren't extinct!' and 'OMG, fire ferret**** and polar beardog!'. Not to mention 'City-based plot!' and 'intrigue!' and 'tension between benders and non benders!'.
It's a good thing I'm used to this from this fandom.

* Okay, I realize they probably changed the title from Avatar: (The?) Legend of Korra because of James Cameron making a movie called 'Avatar', and folks getting sick of saying 'elemental martial artists, not blue cat-people'. But they already name at least four airbenders outside of Korra herself (Tenzin and his three children -- interviews say that Tenzin's siblings aren't airbenders), so it's not like The Last Airbender is true any more.
And it screws up my fic indexing, dammit!
** Named after Mako, Iroh's original VA, who also was a pioneer in getting better roles for East Asian actors in Hollywood.
*** Granted, Zuko had a lot to be broody over so it would be hard to reach Zuko-level brooding without either having a Terrible Childhood or being incredibly self-absorbed.
**** It's a cross between a red panda and a black-footed ferret. And also adorable.
(5) And crying Tears! Of! Blood! because it was confirmed Aang and Katara reproduced. Now we find out they had three kids, and now have grandkids. Yes, fandom, Zuko/Katara never happened. It's okay. Really. I anticipate more fuss now that it's revealed Toph had a child -- no word on the father. Personally, I think Toph's badassitude(6) allows her to reproduce parthenogenically, which doesn't stop her from still being able to get any person she wants.
(6) I love how Toph is a memetic badass.
