Medical TMI
Sep. 14th, 2012 11:16 pmI want to write some more book reviews (or book rambles) and writing thoughts, but I've been a bit under the weather.
So, about three weeks ago, I started noticing bits of old blood that made it look a lot like I was on the last day of my period. After 2 weeks of that, I get a bit worried and ask a doctor what's going wrong. She says that it could just be stress or my hormone cycle being a bit out of whack, and I should keep an eye on it and call back if either I don't get my period or the problem persists after that.
Well, about ten days ago, I started my period. And, well, it hasn't stopped. This is about as fun as it sounds, especially since I get acne during this part of the month. And it's probably messing with my mood, but I'm not very perceptive about these things.
So, today I head to the doctor. And get a bit of a runaround thanks to an idiot at the lab: we start with the normal nurse comes in and takes my vitals, doctor comes in and confirms my symptoms and outlines what we're going to do, then I get undressed and gown'd up. Then the doctor comes back and tells me that one of the blood tests she wants to give me has to be run to the hospital for analysis and it won't keep*, and they told her the courier will be leaving in 10-15 minutes. So I get dressed and head down to the lab.
Where the receptionist apologizes and says that the guy on the phone was wrong and the courier went home at 3 PM. So, I go back upstairs and the doctor apologizes and gets a bit frustrated at the lab staff because they wanted me to check with her before I got the other tests she ordered. But, anyway, I get poked and prodded and my blood drawn and an appointment for an ultrasound on Monday (which involves finding out how to get to the hospital from my apartment while having a full bladder) and a prescription for birth control pills to stop the bleeding by messing with my hormones.
So, yeah. The doctor isn't sure what it is, since it could be anything from stress to fibroids (which are benign growths in the uterus). The blood tests rule out things like 'my thyroid is broken' and the doctor doesn't think it's a case of 'my blood isn't clotting'. Hopefully it's just a case of 'lol, grad school messes you up'.
* This one's to make sure my blood is clotting right, so I guess they can't do whatever it is they do to keep blood samples around.
