I was doign wolrdbuilding and conlanging today and I discovered something new about one of my characters...

Ever since I started actually making up Darynese itself, I was startign to think about what my Darynese characters' names actualy meant. Alri's full name (Alriai) struck me as unusual -- it has a consecutive vowel and dipthong which is unusual in Darynese -- most of the time words like that are terms for people (like professions, familial relationships, etc). Also, the prefix Al- is usualyl sued on plurals. So Alri's name meant 'The Somethings', with something implied to be a adult female group of people. And I was thinking, who the hell names a child that? Then I remembered a Darynese religious belief I had coem up with earlier -- the Darynese believe the time between conceptiona dn birht of a baby is the time that not only is the body formed, but the soul becomes attached to the body. They also believe that a similar period occurs after deatn -- involving the soul separating from body and eventually leaving this world for the next -- that's the traditional mourning period, as it is considered bad to piss of the relatives while they still might be hanging around. Anyway, an old tradition states that any child concieved during a morning period for a relative or close friend should be named after said relative -- with appropriate adjustments so that we don't end up with a boy named the Darynese equivalent of Susie, because his parents stuck off during Great Aunt Susan's funeral.
So anyways, I finally came up with a story for Alri's name. Alri's parents were merchant spacers, and Alri's mother also had a set of twin sisters in the business, who operated a ship together. About a year before Alri was born, that ship had a malfunction of the worst sort, lost atmosphere and all hands were lost. A few motnhs later Alri's mother discovered she was pregnant. She couldn't name the baby after one sister without slighting the other, so she compromised and named the child Alriai -- which translates roughtly to 'the pilots'. It's an unusual name -- meaning I can never recycle it, unless someone names a child after Alri -- and I'm sure Alri would have taken grief for it had she actually known many Darynese children growing up, but... *shrugs*
