This occured to me when talking to
yuuo last night on Slayers and why the hell Lina's so powerful.
See, Lina can cast the Giga Slave, which calls on the power of hte Lord of Nightmares. In four television series and several movies and OAVs, only one other character calls on the Lord of Nightmares and gets an answer -- in Lost Universe, Rayle Claymore has some sort of 'spell' that will freeze up Dark Lords that calls on 'the golden one between llight and darkness' or something like that -- I really need to rewatch. Yet, Rayle's spell isn't nearly as powerful as the Giga Slave (okay, it prevents Ragud Mezegis from killing him, but Ragud Mezegis is still there afterward). One explanation could be that while Lina is accustomed to acting as a channel for otherworldly powers -- she casts a lot of Black Magic -- Rayle is not -- he has minimal contact with Dark Star or Vorfeed's follower, and no special abilities.
I'm going to present another explanation. L-sama is many things -- she is Chaos, for one. This means she is both creative and destructive -- contrary to Phibrizzo's belief, Chaos does not equal destruction. She also is the only authority above the Dark Lords and Dragon Gods. Lina would have first encountered her as 'the Dark Lord of all Dark Lords' though -- the mazoku kept better records of what they are than the dragons, and seemed to have a stronger heirarchy. In addition, Lina studies Black Magic, the power derived from the maozku and Dark Lords. She knows little white magic -- most of which was probably taught to her by her sister. Rayle also found out about L-sama through study of Dark Lords -- though he was looking for a way to stop them, and found something that both light and darkness must bow to. It's like the Blind Men and the Elephant -- all of them make correct observations, but their interpretations are flawed.
These differing views of what L-sama is shaped the spells derived from her power that Lina and Rayle use. Lina calls on a primary part of the Lord of Nightmares -- the destructive half. Consequently, she gets a lot more power than Rayle, who only calls on L-sama as someone that is above Dark Star. And both of them get the power that they ask for from L-sama.
This also gets into the fact why Lina needed the Clare Bible in NEXT -- it gave her furhter insight into the nature of L-sama whihc let her perfect the Ragna Blade -- a spell that was much more focused (and less dangerous) than the Giga Slave. Basically, it taught her that there was more to L-sama than widespread destruction and that she was NOT just Shabranigdo-but-more-so.
