Procrastination strikes again! Huzzah!

beccastareyesI was going to spend today working on my summer reaidng course -- I have to have 4 1800-word journal entries written by the end of the month. I have 2/3 of one, and I still need to read 2 books. Instead of doing them, I read Mercerdes Lackey novels (a guilty little pleasure of mine). -_- I have proven that I can read three books in 4 days, though by this little experiment... two were Mercedes Lackey, and one was a book by Larry Niven called The Integral Trees.
I need to thank AJ for recommending The Integral Trees. It's exactly the kind of science-fiction/fantasy that I just eat up -- basically setting in a world that is both well-developed in detial, and pushing the wow! button in overall scope. Plus, it was creative -- it's basically a gas torus surrounding a neutron star -- M-type conditions (to use a Star Trek word) in a freefall atmosphere. Settle with a bunch of bizzare creatures adapted to life in free-fall, and a group of stranded humans, and you have gold.
The most guarenteed way of gtting me to adore a book is to give me an interesting world... characters? we don't need no steenkin characters...
Nah, just kidding, but I do read some pretty bad stuff just because I like the world.
I had to explain to the nice fangirls at the forums on Mediaminer.org (off topic: if Fanfiction.net is the Pit of Voles, what's mm.org? The overall quality of fangirls isn't THAT much better, if it's better at all) why Fangirl Japanese is annoying. My basic points:
1) It disrupts the flow of the story to have bits in Japanese
2) Some fans don't know Fangirl Japanese
3) It's silly and pretentious

Watch me get argued with, as I did when I stated that most incest pairings squick me (it's not the biology, it's the fact that people in a familial relationship usually don't want to get into each others' pants as well) and that a cosplayer should not be called bad just because he/she has the wrong build/hair color/gender to play a character. I also got annoyed in a favorite ships thread at several people who posted several dozen ships each, without explaining why the hell they ship the way they so, despite the fact, that is what the topic-starter asked for them to do.
I'm making lots of friends at mm.org. *evil grin*
