So, I once explained how I view characters when writing fanfiction -- that when I read a source, I'd create projections of the characters and setting in my brain as I read, and use copies of those to write fanfiction.

Now, here's my problem. I do this with my own characters as well. So I can have three or four versions all floating around -- same background, but different events. Or... let me use a character as an example.

I played Zack in a tabletop game (0). After that, I moved him to an online cross-over game with a couple of friends (1). Several years later, a friend from the tabletop game and I started playing one-on-one online, and we revived our tabletop characters from Zack's game (2). I also created another version of him in a different universe for another private game (3).

So that's three characters -- four if I split Zack-0 from either possible continuation of him. All have the same name and backstory, but have become different versions of the same person. It doesn't bother me -- I can keep them straight. What gets troublesome is when I do things like MAX, where I give people my character bios and ask them to draw things for me. Now, for a portrait or some things, the version doesn't matter. Others... like character interaction pieces, it does matter.

Worst case comes when the versions have differences in design.

So, a way to communicate this clearly to people. Besides the old fandom standby of X!(Name).

(This does remind me I promised our RP crowd over on [insanejournal.com profile] the_nexus_rpg a wiki, just to keep track of the regular characters. The question would be to host it on my own site, or use a commercial wiki host.)

My day

beccastareyes: (have a nice sol!)
Things are a little crazy, since school starts this Thursday. I might be taking a class -- there's a seminar on comets that may help me, as I also study small icy things in the outer solar system. Also, there's a grading position open, and I acquired a reputation for being a fast grader, but I'm not hurting for money, so I might hold off.

Anime club looks good this year. I helped do the chalking today. A common way of advertising anything at Cornell is to get sidewalk chalk and a busy spot and get to work. Meghan, one of the members, draws well, so she brings a picture from something we're watching, and gets to work. The rest of us help with lettering, flats and that kind of stuff -- things people who can't draw well can be trusted with. So, if you go in front of the school store, there's a nice shot of Youko from Twelve Kingdoms. There's a Yuuko from XXXholic somewhere on North Campus. If the club site puts up pictures, I'll link them.

Also managed to nearly lose my ATM card at the store. Thankfully, in the time it took me to search my pockets, return my purchase to the shelf, head down to the bank, and ask the teller what to do, a customer found it on the floor, gave it to a store clerk, who took it to the bank in the store and asked them if they could find me. Seriously -- the teller was asking a coworker if she could get through to VISA when the coworker asked if this was the card she was trying to cancel. (Awesome people for being so prompt.)

Unfortunately, I spent most of today hunting down why my website wasn't working. Turns out I let the domain name registration lapse*, so I have a site, but no way to get to it besides through IP address. I ended up getting a similar name (.com instead of .net), and now just need the nice folks at my webhosts to tell me how to hook A into B, when I don't know how to get into my site to tell it 'okay, we need to point here'.

* Because the email it is linked to no longer exists, and I remember nothing about how to get into my billing account. I am brilliant, I know.

I got markers. Once the tea** kicks in, I'm gonna color this evening. ^_^ The internet also appears to be working again -- it was being spotty. Not enough to not work, but enough that I couldn't stream music or stay in a chat room.

** Jasmine green, third brew. There's enough to give me a bit of a pick-me-up after work, without keeping me up past bedtime.

Site Stuff

So, I'm trying to decide how to archive my writing. I have two options (well, three, but I'm ruling out the 'plain HTML' that I've been using so far).

-- Option 1: An archive script.
Pros: Has things built in, like chaptering and searching by word count.
I can run it on site, once I clear up a database.

-- Option 2: A journal.
Pros: Many people already use them, so they'll see updates automatically, without me having to make a feed.
Comment threading -- I like being able to have a conversation about my fics.

If I write something for a community, I can link to my archived copy, rather than the one on my journal -- keeping all comments in one place.

What does everyone else think? I'm leaning towards a journal.

So, I spent an hour cataloging my fics (well, I still need to do the drabbles and ficllets, which is most of them). Eventually I plan on using PHP/MySQL to retool my website's archive into something cool, but it means having a database ready -- that's not the masochistic part, but I'm getting there. Which means fic word counts. Which means getting the counts. Which means opening a lot of stories I haven't read in years...

... my God, my old fics sucked! And, no, that's not an invitation to go read them and tell me otherwise. I'm kind of glad my first two (finished) fics aren't on the net anymore. Though my third fic (the only thing I saved from my time in Digimon fandom) is at least a 'if I gave it a total rewrite, it might be better than half the stuff the fandom puts out'. The other stuff that's about its age is probably in the same boat -- it was mostly written in my silly fanbrat stage.

No, I'm not deleting them. Someone, somewhere, might like them -- after all, they are properly spelled, of a reasonable length, somewhat shippy and have enough characterization that a name swap would be noticable. For fandom, that's not that bad.

Also, eee! My Avatar: The Last Airbender boxset came today! (As in, I had to pause to sign for the package while writing this entry.)
