So, I got the third Slayers novel today. It weirds me out not having Amelia around. I mean, she was included in the manga and anime by this point, but not the novels.
Like the manga, the novels have a bit more interesting stuff going on offscreen. Like the fact Zel and Sylphiel meet up before Lian even comes to town and are working together to break Copy Rezo/Eris's control of Sylphiel's father. Almost makes me want to write a missing scene fic. I would have to work on my novel!Zel characterization -- he is much more (obviously) arrogant in the novels.
The novel also has Zel saying that Rezo told him he had two sorcerers working for him that were better than Zel. One is Erishiel Vrumuguun (Eris). Never says who the other is.
Unlike the first arc, the manga is much closer to the novels than either is to the anime. And, dude, manga-novel Rezo is decidely more obviously twisted by Shabby* -- basically instead of Copy Rezo being a creation of Eris's to further her revenge on Lina Inverse, Rezo created a copy of himself (a homonucleus, if you will ::smirks at the FMA fans::) to test eyesight cures on. According to Copy, he wasn't originally created with a will of his own. When Rezo figured out he could cure the clone but not the original he gotr frustrated and took it out on Copy, basically using him for a general-purpose sorcery experiment. When an experiment with a Mazoku (Zanafaar is never named in connection with Copy in the novels, though he is in the manga) is done, Copy becomes a hybrid and gains free will. He promptly decides to kill Rezo and Eris.

* Especially manga Rezo. For all we know novel Rezo was never a nice guy, but Lina has a conversation with the spirit of Rezo after killing Shabby in the manga.
