I know I tend towards canon pairings, and this is not a canon pairing at all. But this one is just so adorable in the first anime.
Anyway, Winry is the main character's childhood friend, who in modern terms would be a biomedical engineer and in her world's terms is an automail mechanic -- she makes and fits prosthetics learning from her grandma. Convenient, when her childhood friend, Edward Elric, loses his arm and leg, and needs prosthetics. She's also a total gearhead -- let her near any machine and she'll want to see how it works. When Winry visits Central City, she normally ends up staying with the Hughes, friends of Edward.
Sheska was a librarian working at the military's library before she was fired for spending more time reading than doing her job. She also has an eidetic memory, at least for the written word. Edward remembers this, and when the library she worked at burned down, recruits her to recopy a book he needs and then gets her a job working as a clerk for Maes Hughes, who is investigating governmental corruption.
Anyway, in the first anime, the two meet after Sheska realizes the head of the government's secretary is 1. supposed to be dead and 2. was involved in starting the last war -- she doesn't realize 3. is a dead ringer for Edward Elric's mother. Between Winry's technical know-how and Sheska's connections, the two decide to get to the bottom of this -- and end up in a lot of trouble, but still. It was adorable to watch them work together, and listen to Winry play Scully to Sheska's Fox-Mulder theories about the secretary.
