beccastareyesDay 19 - A pairing you've rooted for since the beginning? Sokka/Suki
Well, it's not something I could truly root for since the beginning beginning since Suki isn't in the first episode, but I liked it when Suki showed up in Season 1, and was pleased as punch when she showed up again in Seasons 2 and 3.
Normally, I don't like the 'sexist is shown his errors by talented female', mostly because it rings false. A lot of times when folks get their views challenged like that, they just build in exceptions. On the other hand, maybe it was the fact Sokka was a teenaged boy who had apparently spent most of his life in the same small village, so there wasn't that much entrenched to fight.
Anyway, it was a cute episode to see Sokka take his first step in being the Badass Normal of the group and to introduce Suki as the experienced leader of a bunch of young fighting women. We then get the next episode a season later -- well, we get another stop on Kyoshi Island -- where Sokka has to deal with the fact that he developed a crush on Suki, left, then dated another girl for a while who is now the Moon Spirit, and he's not sure how to cope with the lack of closure from Yue. And, later, we actually get to see Suki on her own when she finds Appa. And her be a general bad-ass in the Season 3 prison break.
I would have liked things more if we had gotten more scenes with Suki outside of her development with Sokka, but I guess that's the perils of being a minor character. (Mai fared better, probably because she was an antagonist for a season.) But it was cute whenever they were on-screen together. I also liked that Sokka was totally cool with the fact his girlfriend was as awesome at fighting as he was, once he got it through his head that she was both a woman and a warrior.
Also, Sokka's little love nest in the Southern Raiders. (How the hell did that get past the censors?)
