beccastareyesDay 23 - A crazy love triangle/quadrilateral that worked out great? Merle/Van/Hitomi/Allen/Millerna/Dryden
Okay, I could probably reduce that down to Van/Hitomi/Allen, but...
It doesn't include Dryden and does include the moleman, but what do you want from me?
So, let's explain this. Merle may see Van as a crush or as a big brother; either way she's protective of him. Van sees Merle as a little sister, but he's falling for Hitomi. Hitomi is falling for Van too, but she also thinks Allen is hot because he looks like her crush from back home, Amano*. Allen shows interest in both Hitomi and Princess Millerna**. Millerna is totally infatuated with Allen, but her father wants her to marry Dryden, a rich merchant's son. Dryden is totally infatuated with Millerna.
... You know what? I'm gonna draw a picture... a very spoilerific picture.
And I forgot a purple arrow going from Allen to Millerna, and a green one between Marlene and Millerna. And threw in some gratuitous villains (because, hey, what's Escaflowne without Dilandau and Folken?)
How it ends up:
1. Merle eases off on Hitomi, after she decides that Van is totally in love and Hitomi is not so bad.
2. Hitomi realizes that her feelings for Allen are a crush and she has more serious feelings for Van.
3. She also tells Yukari to tell Amano about her feelings, before Amano moves overseas.
4. Allen realizes that his constant affairs with younger women are because he mistakes 'lust' + 'must protect women because Daddy let Mommy die and Sis get kidnapped' = 'action!', and decides to ease off on things.
5. Millerna decides give up on her crush on Allen once she discovers Allen had a son with her older sister, and to go ahead with the marriage and at least seems to like Dryden.
6. Dryden then decides he needs to win her love and runs off to do something awesome. Dryden is a bit of a romantic, and also an idiot.
A lot of people weren't happy with the fact Van and Hitomi didn't stay on the same world in the end, but... well, she's a high school girl! She's not going to leave her family forever without telling them where she's going, even if she is in love! That's a big step, all right? Plus... well, I think I'd want some time to be away from a war zone where I have to be not only an adult, but deal with the whole 'people trying to kill me'. To recover. Because, again, teenaged girl!
(I mean, I'd totally support it if Hitomi found a way to go back later, since she seems to have some kind of psychic bond with Van formed from both of their powers. But... well, she could also think of it as 'first love, nice but we both moved on'. )
Either way, it was the right ending. Maybe not the happiest ending, but the right one.
* Who her best friend, Yukari, has a thing for too. But Yukari has never said anything, because... well, she knows Hitomi likes Amano.
** And Millerna's sister Marlene. Who he might actually have been in love with -- they had an illegitimate child together. For that matter, Eries, the third sister, refuses to marry because of her infatuation with Allen. Maybe the man emits pheromones or something.
