Day 28 - A pairing that you will never understand? Sokka/Azula
That's really the only scene Sokka and Azula have, where he's taking a chance when her firebending is turned off to interrogate her about what she did with his girlfriend, and she's provoking him to stall so he and his friends don't chase down her father.
I guess part of it is that I don't see Azula as capable of having a healthy relationship unless she goes through some major therapy. Even when she was saner and trying to flirt, her father's 'you are a prodigy, so I will teach you to be my heir' left her with very few social skills to interact with 'normal' people. Her friendships with Mai and Ty Lee seem to be based partially of their fear of her, though she does seem to care what they think -- in that, having them turn against her led in part to her slide down the sanity scale. Azula seems like she's bound by a hierarchy -- she is better than everyone except her father, so she needs to control them. Friendship only comes once she's sure they know their place. (Like I said, Azula is messed up.*)
Plus... well, Sokka has more sense than that. And no shortage of other girls with crushes on him -- Suki, Yue, Ty Lee, Toph.... I'm not even sure how this happens, as it's not like Sokka and Azula are leftovers in the pairing situation. (Second season left more women than men on the 'major characters', especially when Iroh is usually too old to be involved.) And, Suki, Sokka's canon love interest, isn't really paired with anyone else.
Granted, I'd like to see someone try to deal with Azula's issues. Somehow seeing her left crazy and feeling betrayed by everyone doesn't sit well, even if she's a horrible person. I guess because her father still has his pride, even if he's now powerless and imprisoned, but she seems to have nothing. I'd rather see her stripped of her firebending**, but still as mentally aware as she was in the early seasons and having hope for the future. Azula was quite capable of being a badass without her powers.
* Terrible crackship idea. Azula/Dilandau... my god, they'd probably kill one another, when they weren't setting fire to everyone else.
** Well, she might have been anyway, since crazy woman with control over fire is kind of a horrible idea.
